In December of 1976, at the age of 21, I got my first crack at window painting. After that initial splash I continued painting designs every Christmas season in the small town of Fallon, Nevada, where I lived. The Northern Nevada winters were harsh but that didn't stop me. I had always dreamed of making a living as an artist. People were actually paying me for my designs. I was ecstatic.
Year after year my clientele steadily grew. I was gaining a reputation for my animated window designs and fair prices. Every Christmas in Nevada was both a challenge and a joy. "How many can I do this year?" My techniques also steadily improved. I worked in Fallon for about ten years and became a Christmas tradition in this small Northern Nevada town.
In 1986, I came to Portland,
Oregon, where I continued painting seasonal splashes. I was also working
fulltime, year-round. In the beginning,
it was tough getting work as a window splash artist but I kept at it. After about 3 years things were finally
looking up and my customer base was beginning to expand rapidly. In addition to my window splash work I was
experimenting with character animation and illustration. I am always looking to expand my skills as a
window painter and as an artist in general.
This period of tenacious study and creative exploration had a direct
effect on the quality of my splashes. More and more businesses were becoming
aware of the distinct difference between myself and other window painters.
People liked my quality, fairness and service.
In 1993, I was approached by Fun Tech Industries. They liked my cartoony-style and asked if I would be interested in painting facades on their funhouses. This led to a new career in doing scenic and cartoon pictorials for the traveling midway industry. Although window painting is still my main occupation I continue to work for several different amusement industry companies. To date I have painted over 40 rides. My carnival work can be seen in Florida, Canada, New York, Texas, Nevada, L.A., the Bay Area and of course Oregon and Washington.
I have had quite a prolific
career as a window splash artist. I estimate that I have painted well over
30,000 individual panes of glass in the past 28 years. I have worked for many
local and national companies. In the
fast food industry alone I have worked for:
In 2003 my son joined me. Together we are always seeking ways to improve the quality of our work and at the same time keep the level of our service high.
